Sustainability · Hunter Valley Resort + Farm · Pokolbin

Looking after 100 acres in the Hunter Valley for the generations that follow.

Hunter Valley Resort + Farm is a family-owned property set across 100 acres in Pokolbin. For us, sustainability is practical. It is about how we generate and use energy, manage water, treat wastewater, reduce waste and look after the property where our family lives and works.

Many of these practices happen quietly behind the scenes while guests stay, eat, drink, meet and experience the Farm.

Our Approach

Practical changes. Made over time.

Sustainability at the Farm is not one project. It is a series of decisions about how we operate accommodation, restaurants, a vineyard, meeting spaces and a working 100-acre property.

01 · Use less

Reduce what we consume.

Energy efficiency, solar generation and responsible water management help reduce the resources required to operate the property.

02 · Reuse where practical

Keep useful resources working.

Water, organic material and other resources can often have another useful purpose rather than simply becoming waste.

03 · Think long term

Look after the place.

As a family-owned Hunter Valley business, decisions made today affect the property we leave for the future.

Energy · Solar Power

Making use of the Hunter Valley sun.

More than 250 solar panels help generate electricity for Hunter Valley Resort + Farm.

Solar generation works alongside energy-saving measures including LED lighting and inverter technology to help reduce the amount of electricity we need to draw from the grid.

For a property operating accommodation, restaurants, meeting spaces and guest facilities, reducing day-to-day energy demand is an important part of how we operate.

  • Reduced reliance on electricity drawn from the grid
Every drop counts. Managing water carefully is part of operating a 100-acre property in the Hunter Valley.

Water · Treatment · Reuse

Managing our own water onsite.

Hunter Valley Resort + Farm is not connected to town water or sewer services, so water management has long been part of everyday life on the property.

Water is collected and managed onsite, including through dams and stormwater harvesting. Wastewater is also treated onsite rather than being discharged to a municipal sewer system.

Where appropriate, treated water can then be reused around the property, including vineyard and garden areas.

Waste · Recycling · Reuse

Waste doesn't always have to be waste.

Accommodation, restaurants and a working Farm produce different waste streams. Our approach is to separate, recycle and find another practical use for materials wherever we can.

Recycling

Glass, cardboard and paper are separated for recycling, helping reduce the volume of material going into general waste.

Organic material

Food and other suitable organic material can be diverted from general waste for composting or other practical reuse around the Farm.

Back to the Farm

On a working property, some organic material can become useful again, including material associated with Farm and vineyard activities.

Regeneration · Partnerships

Looking beyond our own boundary.

Sustainability also means supporting projects that help restore and protect the wider environment.

4 Pines + Landcare Australia

Our relationship with 4 Pines connects the Farm with the wider environmental work undertaken through the 4 Pines partnership with Landcare Australia.

That initiative has supported the planting of tens of thousands of native trees, shrubs and groundcover plants as part of regeneration projects.

We are proud that 4 Pines at the Farm can connect the experience guests have here in Pokolbin with a broader commitment to environmental regeneration.

People + Community

Sustainability is also about the community around us.

Hunter Valley Resort + Farm has grown as part of the Hunter Valley community. Supporting local people, organisations and initiatives is another part of thinking about the long-term health of the place we call home.

Local community

We support local schools and community initiatives and look for practical opportunities to contribute to the region in which our family and team live and work.

WUPA @ Wanaruah

Our relationship with WUPA @ Wanaruah and Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation goes back many years. We provide gallery space at the Farm at no charge, giving local Aboriginal artists another place to show and sell their work to Hunter Valley visitors throughout the year.

Guests and day visitors can discover a changing selection of WUPA artwork here in Pokolbin, learn about the artists and their stories, and explore the wider collection available directly through WUPA.

Children + literacy

We have supported Dymocks Children's Charities and its work helping children access books and literacy opportunities.

Family business

Being family owned shapes the way we think about the future. We live here too, so looking after the Farm and our community is personal.

Conferences + Corporate Events

Planning a conference in the Hunter Valley?

Sustainability is increasingly part of the conversation when organisations choose where to meet.

Hunter Valley Resort + Farm offers six dedicated meeting spaces, accommodation, dining and team activities on the same 100-acre Pokolbin property.

Keeping different parts of a program together onsite can simplify logistics, while delegates experience a family-owned Hunter Valley property where practical environmental measures are part of everyday operations.

Family Owned · Pokolbin

A family business thinking long term.

Sustainability isn't a badge for us. It is an ongoing responsibility to look after the property where we live and work.

There will always be more that can be done. Our approach is to keep improving, make practical changes where we can and continue looking after our part of the Hunter Valley for the generations that follow.
